“As a teacher for 16 years, I have worked with children with various learning difficulties. Based on my experiences, I was very concerned about my own child’s progress in K-3. He avoided reading, read with little fluency and was below grade level. He was not able to write or
learn information without memorizing orally. He was often fatigued, distracted, and uncomfortable in school. He seemed to always have red eyes in school.

“His year at vision therapy has been a genuine success story. After a summer of vision therapy, he was one year above grade level in reading. He has been extremely successful in all academic areas. Studying infinitely easier. He has become a happy, capable and confident student. I would like to strongly encourage any parent who has a child struggling in school to have their child screened for tracking issues. My child has 20/20 vision so his visual impairment was not discovered earlier. I do not believe any modifications in school would have been effective in helping my child to do well in school. Vision Therapy has been critical in his development.

“I am very grateful to Dr. Cantwell, Mrs. Cantwell and Sherell! Their dedication has been life-altering for my son.”

“Since my son entered the public school system, he has been behind in reading. He also struggled in other areas like math and writing. Needless to say, his self-esteem suffered because of it. He was also diagnosed with visual perceptual issues which made sports and other extracurricular activities difficult. A friend shared her success story with me (with Cantwell Vision Therapy) so we had an evaluation. Shortly after, we started therapy. In about six months time we noticed a great improvement and the teacher at school also noticed. My son had SOLs in the spring and, not only did he pass everything, he was advanced in a few areas. This year he is in the 4th grade and doing amazing. He is reading on grade level AND he made the honor roll. He also just finished his 1st season of flag football and did great. His confidence is wonderful and it has made our whole family much happier. I am sad, in a way, to be finished because the staff is amazing and I will miss them. Our story is truly a success story.”

“My daughter started Vision Therapy with a light therapy phase and then moved to the in-office sessions twice a week. Her difficulties in school were apparent in her reading comprehension, reading fluency and in resolving new words. Within six months of the Vision Therapy program, we were able to notice improved reading fluency, less stumbling over new words and a decrease in skipping words. It was becoming evident the light therapy and the Vision Therapy programs were producing benefits. She was struggling much less with her reading assignments and homework. Dr. Cantwell then adjusted her program to focus on visual perceptual exercises which in turn began to improve her reading comprehension. In the classroom, this definitely improved her ability to read a passage then answer questions about what was read. It also helped her overcome her dislike of chapter books.

“We truly appreciate the help and the results we received from Dr. Cantwell and his professional staff.”

“My daughter was mad at me for making her do the therapy. She has since thanked me. She is no longer having difficulty reading. Her spelling has greatly improved. She is more confident in school and struggles much less. She actually enjoys reading. I know we made the right decision to do the therapy. We have saved her from a lifetime of struggling unnecessarily.”

“My daughter now can read without skipping words, dropping endings or just giving up. In fact, she is reading whole books in a short period of time. . . . without being asked. No frustration anymore! This has changed our lives. She can do her homework independently now without errors! Before Vision Therapy, homework took hours with lots of tears, both parent AND child frustrated. Thank you!”

“In first grade, he started falling behind. He didn’t want to try to read anymore even though he loved hearing stories. His writing was poor with lots of reversal. When he did read, he paused in the middle of words and lost his place. Problems continued into third grade when his problem was finally identified. After 11 months of therapy, his reading ability has skyrocketed. His writing and spelling are starting to improve. He says reading is a lot easier now and he recommends Vision Therapy too.”

“I strongly recommend Vision Therapy, and most importantly vision testing during the critical developing years of childhood. Vision Therapy has helped my son improve on a long-standing spelling problem. I believe that his tracking weaknesses made it nearly impossible for him to copy correctly. Copying accurately is a skill that is assumed in the classroom. He was never able to spell even one syllable words except phonetically, which quickly falls apart in the real world. Even though our son is 16, the Vision Therapy made real improvements possible. His spelling has been transformed so that it is completely normal when he studies. We have even noticed advances in the complex task of taking notes, listening to lectures and comprehending the lesson – all at once! I sincerely believe that if he’d had this Vision Therapy at 7 or 8, his life would have been radically different – school would not have been this constant struggle.”

“My child was struggling with reading comprehension. The teacher identified that he was behind in reading compared to other areas and recommended we look into special education. Special Ed. didn’t seem right and we heard about Vision Therapy. His eye tracking started to improve immediately and when we received his standardized test 1 year later he had jumped 4 grade levels in reading comprehension and 2 years ahead of his grade – all of his scores increased dramatically as well.”

“When my son started Vision Therapy he was at the end of 2nd grade. He didn’t like to read and was struggling at school with all of his subjects. By the middle of Vision Therapy he was enjoying reading chapter books. He was reading almost at grade level. At the end of Vision Therapy he could read the chapter books his classmates were reading and was reading on grade level. There was no longer the battle to get him to read. He was excited to read and finish chapter books. When assessed at school for his reading level and comprehension he was able to read on level and maintain his comprehension.”

“This pretty much sums it up for us: ‘I love reading now, it’s like a movie in my head.’ This brought tears to our eyes. We can’t thank you enough.”

“My son went from struggling to read a 7th grade book to buzzing through an 8th grade book in five hours! He himself was thrilled and his self-confidence in his reading and reading-related school work has improved immensely! I am thrilled with the results and know that my son is as well.”

“Our daughter started having difficulty in the 3rd grade. She couldn’t accurately copy the homework assignments off the board. Her teacher told her she was lazy and careless and she started disliking school. Thankfully, we heard about Vision Therapy and came to Dr. Cantwell’s (in the 4th grade). We found out that the reason she had trouble with copying and spelling was a fixable vision problem. Now our daughter is a straight A, honor roll student who is being considered for the gifted and talented program. Thank you for helping her to unlock her true potential.”

“My daughter was struggling in school. She was frustrated and really couldn’t tell me what was wrong – because she didn’t know. She didn’t know she wasn’t seeing words correctly. Since 2nd grade I’ve been trying to figure out why an apparently bright and happy girl could get so frustrated and upset when it came time to do homework or read aloud.

“Finally, at the end of the 4th grade, she was assessed and started Vision Therapy. Within a few weeks her reading became more fluid. Throughout the summer and first half of 5th grade she did therapy. And she blossomed. Not only is she more confident, she’s not as emotional when it comes to reading and homework.”

“I would have never thought my daughter had a vision problem. She had been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD in the 4th grade. She was not hyperactive so I declined giving her prescription medication. She never said that she could not see clearly. She had adjusted to her hazy view of the world and considered herself clumsy. She always hated reading and would often complain that she was tired and would abruptly stop. Her grades began to suffer. It wasn’t until she reached the 7th grade that a vision problem became apparent during a routine vision exam at school.

“Working with Dr. Cantwell has been amazing. Through various testing and input from my daughter and myself, he was able to clearly diagnose my daughter’s vision problems. I was amazed to discover that many of the symptoms of ADHD closely resemble vision problems. After eight short months, my daughter can now see the world with clarity. She is no longer bumping into things and now actually enjoys reading. Her grades have improved drastically. Her confidence has improved. Vision therapy not only helped my daughter’s vision, but it helped her discover the answer to a question that secretly plagued her for years. She now knows that she is not different or lazy. She simply needed to see the world clearly. Dr Cantwell and his staff gave that to her through Vision Therapy. I am forever grateful.”

“Our son never liked school and hated drawing. He never liked to color like many preschoolers. He struggled to learn his alphabet, write his name, and read. He had a great interest in learning ‘real things’ but not through books. We tested his vision with Dr. Cantwell at the end of 1st grade and discovered that he had real problems. Now, 8 months later, he is excelling in his 2nd grade classroom. He is reading in one of the top groups in his class and he has just discovered that he now likes to draw as well. He has also improved in the sports that he loves – baseball and basketball. Vision Therapy has made a vast improvement in his entire life.”

“Prior to vision therapy, my daughter had a hard time reading. Her fluency and comprehension was below grade level and she became very tired after trying to read a few pages. Since Vision Therapy, her reading level advanced two grade levels. She is able to read a whole chapter book without being tired or getting a headache. We are also amazed at how her visual memory and comprehension have improved. She is so much happier to read to her class and her confidence level is amazing now.”

“I can’t even put into words how beneficial Vision Therapy has been to our son. He has gone from a child who hated to read to a child who reads and talks about what he has read. His DRA [Developmental Reading Assessment] Scores have improved. He can follow along when others read. Dr. Cantwell and staff are wonderful. The office environmental is one of support and caring. Vision Therapy was worth the cost and time. I tell everyone who asks how great it was for my son and family.”
